Bio
Coach Karko takes over the helm of the soccer program in 2007. He has been around IND soccer since 1996 when his daughter,
Jessa ’00, made Varsity as a Freshman. He first
assisted Coach Rick Loftus during the 1998 season and served as an assistant to Coach Dave Schaeffer for eight seasons.
Coach Karko wrestled and ran track while at Curley and continued as sprinter in college. Soccer was never his primary
sport, but he has competed on various rec and club teams (indoor and outdoor) over the years.
Coach Karko is an Administrator with the Pretrial Release Services Program where he has worked over 30 years.
Phyllis, his wife, is a 1970 IND grad and is the Principal at the
St. Joseph Fullerton School. Jessa, a four year starter at UMBC ('04), was a Captain on the
Women's Soccer Team and Co-President of the Student Athletic Council her
Junior and Senior years. Jessa was a member of the University's
Selection Committee for an Assistant A.D. She continues to play for
the Baltimore Bays SC. His son, Louie was a 4 year starter at UMBC (’01) and Loyola High School(’97). He
was the first draft pick of the Philadelphia KIXX of the MISL; the Baltimore Blast, currently, has his rights.
He continues to play for the Baltimore Bays SC.
Coach Karko was named Baltimore City Soccer Coach of the Year in 2007 by
The Baltimore Sun.
